Such error can be most of the time generated due to some of the following reasons:
- You have published a post and then deleted it.
- You have linked to any post that does not exist on your blog.
- You have changed your author URL.
- You have changed the blog post URL.
There may be a various reasons for your blog that could cause 404 error pages. Most of the time you can discover such error pages in your Google Webmaster Tools under the Crawl Errors page.
In the following screenshot, you can see that one URL is causing 404 error page on my WordPress blog & the reason is this URL page doesn’t exist in my blog.
These errors do nothing to your blog nor preventing your blog from getting indexed by Search Engines such as Google, Bing & others but may impact your Bonus Rate of your blog.

How to Redirect 404 Error Pages to Custom Pages In WordPress?
In order to redirect any 404 error page to any specific or custom page on your WP blog, you need to install this redirection plugin to your WordPress blog.
You can either install this plugin right from your WordPress Dashboard or can install it using FTP manually. Once you have successfully installed the plugin, follow the below easy steps to redirect the error page to any page you want.
First of all, install the plugin & activate it. Go to Redirection under the Tools on the left sidebar. This will take you to the Redirection plugin setting where you can make redirection. So, in the plugin settings, click on Redirects.
Under ‘Add new redirection’, enter the 404 error page URL in the Source URL and then enter the Target URL where you want the 404 error page to be redirected and lastly select Redirections in Group option as shown in the picture below.
Don’t forget to click Add Redirect button to store the setting.
Using this plugin, you can add unlimited URLs and you can redirect them to any page you specify in the plugin even many URLs to your blog homepage.
